Chairmen named for American
Heart Walk Volunteers from Southlake, Colleyville and Hurst have stepped forward to co-chair the local American Heart Walk, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5, at Texas Star Athletic Complex in Euless. The walk is one of the two largest annual fund-raising activities held locally for the American Heart Association, raising about $50,000 each year for heart disease research and education. This year's event co-chairmen are Gary Fickes of Southlake and Dr. David Carter of Colleyville. Garry Hamilton, president of Chase Bank in Hurst, is serving as co-chairman overseeing sponsor recruitment. Fickes is a principal in Fickes & Dorety development company and is a former mayor of Southlake. He is active in many community organizations, including Metroport Cities Partnership and Southlake Sister Cities. Carter is a cardiac surgeon at Harris Methodist HEB hospital in Bedford. He has been involved with many local American Heart Association activities in the past, including the American Heart Walk and the "Affair of the Heart" black-tie gala. Hamilton is a well-known community figure, having worked with many Northeast Tarrant business and education groups. His focus for this year's American Heart Walk will be to identify and recruit corporate and business sponsors for the event. Communities across the nation participate in American Heart Walk each year to raise money for heart disease research and education. Local planners of this year's American Heart Walk have set a goal of raising $50,000 for heart disease research and education programs. In order to reach that level, competitions will be encouraged among school districts, businesses, cities, hospitals and service organizations. In addition, prizes will be given to individual walkers who reach specific levels of pledges. Company leaders and team captains already are being recruited for the American Heart Walk. Family and individual walkers also are encouraged. Heart disease and stroke are the number one cause of death in the United States. Nearly half of all Tarrant County deaths during the past two years have been attributed to cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association's national goal is to reduce death and disability from heart disease by 25 percent by the year 2010. Currently, cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States, causing about 950,000 deaths each year. Locally, 41 percent of all deaths recorded in Tarrant County during 1998 were related to cardiovascular disease. About 78 percent of the American Heart Association budget is used for education, research and community service projects. To sign up as a walker or team captain, or for more information about the Northeast Tarrant Division of the American Heart Association, call Meggan Lambert at (817) 315-5011. Additional information on American Heart Association goals and programs is available on the Internet at www.americanheart.org.
