Bedford is a community of heritage. The first known settlers in the Bedford area began arriving in the 1850's, seeking a better life for their families. History records that Milton Moore migrated from Missouri in 1860 and built a house on a half section of land. Weldon Wiles Bobo migrated from Bedford County, Tennessee in 1870, and established a store. By the mid 1930s, Bedford had four stores. "Bedford's best is in the cemetery," said a leading citizen. In 1940, the population was 76 The next two
decades saw significant development. A library was opened in a small
house near the fire hall/city hall building in 1964, and was moved in
1966 to a larger house on Forest Ridge Drive. The police department was
created in 1965 with one police officer.
