Bedford is a community of heritage. The first known settlers in the Bedford area began arriving in the 1850's, seeking a better life for their families. History records that Milton Moore migrated from Missouri in 1860 and built a house on a half section of land. Weldon Wiles Bobo migrated from Bedford County, Tennessee in 1870, and established a store.

By the mid 1930s, Bedford had four stores. "Bedford's best is in the cemetery," said a leading citizen. In 1940, the population was 76

The next two decades saw significant development. A library was opened in a small house near the fire hall/city hall building in 1964, and was moved in 1966 to a larger house on Forest Ridge Drive. The police department was created in 1965 with one police officer.
During the past 25 years Bedford has become a vibrant community. The 1990's brought new housing units and major commercial construction to enhance the city's business prospects; and a rebounding economy has infused the city with new life.

Throughout our history, we have taken pride in our pioneer spirit, and continue the efforts of those first settlers so that Bedford will retain its quality and identity
